Active Metaphore Step by Step to make it run   BEFORE YOU START Go here and download CARNIVORE PE: http://www.rhizome.org/carnivore Go here and download PURE-DATA: http://www-crca.ucsd.edu/~msp/software.html   ONCE YOU HAVE THE SOFTWARE The best way to enjoy ACTIVE_METAPHOR is to install CARNIVORE and PURE-DATA through a different PC to your own, on your local network, as running ACTIVE_METAPHORE with CARNIVORE and PURE-DATA on a single machine may overload it and cause it to crash down. You must make sure that network traffic is going through your network. Ask other people to check the web as well as checking yourself. The more traffic you can make the more feedback you'll get from ACTIVE_METAPHOR. PURE-DATA is an open source software. It hasn't got an exhaustive manual and it drove us nuts to make it run as well.You are not supposed to use it, so don't worry about that and follow the step by step instructions below.   STEP by STEP 1) Install CARNIVORE PE. This step should be quite easy and you shouldn't come across any problems. Read the instructions in the CARNIVORE folder. 2) Install PURE-DATA. This step should also be quite easy and you shouldn't come across any problems. Read the instructions in the P-E folder. 3) Make CARNIVORE run and select the "don't limit output" option in the pop-up menu. If you're going to connect to CARNIVORE from a different Pc, select in the Security section: "Allow connection from the other computer" option. 4) You can skip this step if you don't mind having sound feedback. Start PURE-DATA up and open the file "A_M.pd" in the "pd_patch" folder in the "A_M" folder. You can do this in the usual way by selecting "Open" from the "File" menu in the PURE-DATA window. PD may open two windows, one small window with a graphic inside it and a bigger one. You can close the big one. It will only be useful if you want to work on the PD file's source. We recommend that you use speakers or headphones to experience this piece. 5) Click on the A_M.exe file to run it. If you are running all three programmes on you Pc, then you should click on the CONNECT buttons next to CARNIVORE and PURE-DATA on the top side of A_M. If you need to connect using a different PC, then fill in the form (in the bottom right corner: "LOCALHOST") with the ip address of the PC when you installed CARNIVORE and/or PURE-DATA. If you are a Mac user you must carry out the above instructions because CARNIVORE or PURE-DATA should be running on a Pc on your network. In these fields you'll find "FILL HERE" where you have to fill in the ip addresses. A_M wonąt run if you donąt give it a valid IP address. 6) After pressing the connect buttons, they should change to the "DISCONNECT" command. A message will appear on the right hand side telling you that you've successfully connected to the computer you have choosen. If you get a message like "ERROR RETRY" check it out: - Is CARNIVORE running? - Did you select the "Allow connection from other computers" option in CARNIVORE? - Did you write a valid IP address (if different from localhost)? 7) You should finally get to use A_M. You can now enjoy it by clicking on one of the buttons beside the CLIENTS type in the upper side of A_M. Enjoy. Back to Active Metaphor
